An autobody shop in the early seventies was the
unlikely site for a rare occurrence – the birth of a new art form. When
Eureka Springs artist Ed Lohrum saw the dramatic residue formed on a car
door by a puff of blowtorch smoke, the innovative art of Smoke Drawing
was born in his imagination.
Already an artist experienced in oil, acrylics, and watercolor, Lohrum
produced his first Smoke Drawing in 1974 with an ordinary oil lamp, a
paper plate, and a sewing needle stuck in a pencil eraser. Research and
experimentation eventually led him to a fine oil blend that creates rich
smoke patterns for his mat and airbrushed ink surfaces. To create his
unique and totally original drawings in the smoke, Ed utilizes a shoebox
full of unusual etching devices including dental tools, a kneaded
eraser, walnut, and sea shells, and sometimes even his own beard! |

Each Smoke Drawing emerges from its own distinctive puff of smoke.
Each is original and one-of-a-kind. Out of the ebony shadows gentle
landscapes appear, each generating its own source of light. Every
drawing is a captured, fleeting moment, an individual and intimate
glimpse into Lohrum’s forever changing inner landscapes. Reflecting
his life goals – “to be happy, to create exciting artwork with
God-given talents, and to never retire” – each Smoke Drawing is
guaranteed to be as unique as the art form and the artist himself! |
