John Eric Richardson
This series of work stems from the need to combine the beautiful with the useful, taking a sculptural approach to furniture design.

After art school, I decided to experiment and make something functional, but employing the techniques I learned as a sculptor. The forms I use are inspired by the forms of flowing water, the erosion of limestone, and the irregular growth patterns of trees. Experimentation with this theme has developed the studies into a series of unique furniture pieces ranging from small benches to folding futons.

These works use state-of-the-art adhesives, which make stronger bonds than the fibers of the wood themselves. Combined with joinery techniques learned from ancient masters and contemporary carpenters, these techniques allow me to carve shapes inspired by forms found in nature, but allow for the refinement and stability indicative of heirloom furniture. All of the work is guaranteed for life, under normal use.
The pieces seen in galleries are trials and experiments. They are designed to blend into and unify eclectic collections. They fit into almost any decor. Custom works can be designed to the specifications required by particular clients, to fill any function.
